The tiny nation, with a population of just 333,000, beat Austria .

His strike sent Iceland through as group winners, meaning they will face England on Monday.

No one was happier after Traustason’s strike than commentator Gudmundur Benediktsson. The commentator completely lost the plot after Traustason tapped in at the far post in the dying seconds of the game.

As the ball goes in the net Benediktsson starts screaming “Yes! Yes! Yes!” over and over again.

According to online translations of his impassioned screams he also yells: “We’ve won, we made it!”

Parts of his speech were undecipherable but he can also be heard to say, in Icelandic, “It doesn’t matter, we have made it! Forward. Traustason”.

Following their famous win, Iceland’s coach Heimir Hallgrimsson has joked about making June 22 a national holiday.

He said: “That’s how much [the result] means to us.”

He continued: “I think everybody who was watching the game realised how much it meant to us.

“We were willing to sacrifice everything to win.

“We lost a bit of the initiative midway through the first-half and into the second, but we won the game in the end.

“It was a rollercoaster.”

Speaking about Monday’s clash with England he said: “We’re not afraid of the England game. We know how much fun it is to win now.

“Iceland knows everything about English football, we’re English football crazy.

“I don’t think we need to analyse them much. I think we know everything about them, but there are a lot of threats in their side.

“It will be form on the day that will count in the last 16.”

England and Iceland will clash in Nice on Monday at 8pm (BST).
